Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

Curriculum Vision

At Brackley C of E Junior School we have designed our curriculum with pupils learning and development at the heart. We are committed to providing a curriculum that is broad, balanced and offers opportunities to grow. It is the school’s curriculum vision that teachers strive for academic excellence and encourage every child to reach the highest levels of achievement and personal development. We recognise that every child is unique - therefore we are dedicated to providing a curriculum that is inclusive and meets the needs of every pupil by supporting them in becoming the best they can be, regardless of their background, special needs, ethnicity or disability. We strive to create a friendly, caring atmosphere which is designed to help every child flourish and realise their full potential. The school staff value the different ways in which pupils learn and plan lessons to account for these differences. Through our curriculum we aim for all pupils to be prepared to live life in all its fullness. We want them to be aspirational for their future, be able to make difficult decisions with courage and know that everyone has a place and can contribute to the wider community.

Subject Intent

Our intention is that when children leave Brackley C of E Junior School, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. In an ever–changing world, it is important that they are aware, to an appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these so that they have good mental health and well-being. Our PSHE curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.

Subject Implementation

Our personal, social and health education (PSHE) curriculum is at the forefront of the wider curriculum, and we use the 1 Decision scheme of work to inform our planning. It allows us to bring together citizenship with personal well-being, whilst promoting fundamental British values alongside our school values and biblical roots. PSHE is taught through discreet, weekly lessons and is integrated into our subject curriculums. It underpins all out of the classroom activities including assemblies, educational visits and extra-curricular clubs. We offer a cohesive whole-school approach which enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible citizens. Our PSHE program supports children in enabling them to fully embrace after-school opportunities and become better members of society. The children take part in 2 community-based activities a year as a minimum to foster citizenship and put their PSHE learning to practical use. PSHE is integrated into our broader curriculum and through our school values. We promote:

  • Service
  • Courage
  • Compassion
  • Justice
  • respect

We supplement our curriculum offer with external visitors i.e. dental team, school nurse, NSPCC workshops and the use of the Protective Behaviours curriculum. We also plan in time to participate in country-wide initiatives such as road safety week, diversity week and anti-bullying week.
